Storm Austen is expected to bring intense rain to Ireland overnight and strong winds to southern parts of the UK on Friday, prompting weather warnings and preparations for possible flooding and travel disruption.
Met Éireann issued Status Orange rain warnings for Cork, Kerry and Waterford from 10 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, and for Dublin, Wexford and Wicklow from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Friday. A Status Yellow wind and rain warning is also due to remain in effect until 10 a.m. Friday.
Forecasters warned of localised flooding, difficult driving conditions and disruption to public transport. Irish authorities activated severe-weather teams, while Kerry County Council distributed sandbags in flood-prone areas and placed council and Civil Defence crews on standby. Officials also cautioned that trees still in full leaf could be more vulnerable to strong winds.
In the UK, the Met Office issued a yellow warning for strong winds from midnight to midday Friday across most of southwest England, southern Wales and parts of the south coast as far east as Brighton. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected widely in the warning area, with speeds above 70 mph possible along exposed coasts. Rainfall of 20 to 30 mm is forecast in many places.
The storm is expected to move west to east across the UK on Friday before entering the North Sea late in the day. Further wind and rain are forecast through the weekend and into early next week.
