Two people were killed and eight others injured in an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday evening, the kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said.
The authority identified those killed as a Saudi citizen and an Indian resident. The injured, whose conditions ranged from minor to serious or critical, included Saudi, Indian, Yemeni, Bangladeshi and Nepalese nationals and were taken to hospitals. Saudi authorities did not specify the type of attack or publicly identify those responsible. An earlier official account, reported by Al Jazeera and The Wall Street Journal, had placed the death toll at one.
The incident occurred during a series of drone and missile attacks on Saudi airports, energy facilities and other infrastructure. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement has carried out previous strikes in the kingdom, although there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Dammam attack.
Earlier Wednesday, Saudi air defenses intercepted a drone targeting a Saudi Aramco processing facility at the Shaybah oil field near the United Arab Emirates border. Falling debris killed a Filipino resident and a Nepali resident and injured two others, according to the Saudi Energy Ministry. A contractor’s vehicle caught fire, but Saudi authorities said oilfield operations were unaffected.
The U.S. State Department also ordered non-emergency embassy personnel and family members to leave Saudi Arabia amid the continuing attacks.
