Cockroach Janta Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were summoned for questioning by the Delhi Police Crime Branch on Thursday, a day after they were released from Tihar Jail following seven days in judicial custody.
The Hindu reported that the investigation concerns two cases involving allegations of trespassing at Jantar Mantar, disobeying a government order and obstructing police officers. Ajinkya Shinde, another CJP member detained in connection with the incident, was also summoned. Police transferred the cases from local stations to the Crime Branch, citing their sensitive nature and the need for an impartial investigation.
Das and Ranka were detained on October 13 after entering the barricaded Jantar Mantar site and waving the Indian flag. They were initially remanded to five days in judicial custody for allegedly breaching previously signed peace bonds, before their detention was extended by two days.
On Wednesday, Special Executive Magistrate Ritu Raj rejected a police request for a further three-day extension and ordered their release after accepting personal and surety bonds of Rs 50,000 each. The two submitted written undertakings to maintain peace and not call for protests at Jantar Mantar while its status as a protest site remains restricted.
Earlier Wednesday, Das and Ranka withdrew a Delhi High Court challenge to the extension of their custody after the court noted that another remedy was available.
