South African police opened a murder investigation after a foreign national was beaten to death by a crowd of about 50 people in central Durban on Thursday.
Police said two men broke away from a marching group and approached the victim as he stood beside a road. The larger group then assaulted him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his identity or nationality, describing him as being in his late 30s or early 40s.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said police could not yet determine the motive and were working to identify suspects. Authorities also did not say what the march was about.
The attack occurred amid months of demonstrations against undocumented migrants in South Africa, some of which have become violent. Two weeks earlier, soldiers were deployed in central Durban after rioting and looting during unrest targeting foreign nationals; vehicles were burned and businesses were looted or set alight.
Daily Maverick, republishing reporting by GroundUp, said a security guard who witnessed Thursday’s events believed the marchers were targeting immigrants. The guard also said groups of vigilantes had intimidated shopkeepers and residents in the area for weeks. Police have not publicly confirmed that account or linked the killing to anti-migrant activity.
