U.S. President Donald Trump intensified pressure on Ukraine to reach a settlement with Russia, saying Tuesday that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “has to want to settle this war” and warning that failure to do so would be “a very bad thing.”
Trump argued that Moscow held an advantage because Russia could continue sending people into the war and had kept advancing. Asked about direct talks between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump said hostility between the leaders made such a meeting difficult but added, “I don’t care how it’s done.”
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff met Zelenskyy and European leaders in Oslo on Tuesday. Afterward, Zelenskyy said Ukraine and its European partners had “clear ideas” for pursuing peace and wanted Washington to present them to Russia. He proposed a possible trilateral leaders’ meeting to address issues requiring decisions at the highest level.
Witkoff then met Putin in St. Petersburg on Wednesday. Trump subsequently said the parties might be closer than ever to a breakthrough, while the Kremlin indicated it was open in principle to renewed trilateral talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States.
Fighting continued despite the diplomatic activity. Russia and Ukraine exchanged major overnight attacks, with Moscow’s mayor saying 630 drones had been launched toward the Russian capital region, while Russian barrages also targeted Ukraine.
