France will deploy troops alongside police and mount a “massive” security operation for demonstrations planned on Saturday, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told parliament on Tuesday.
The announcement followed rioting and looting in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and other cities on October 17, when violence erupted on the sidelines of nationwide protests over the cost of living. Lecornu acknowledged that the previous security operation had been “too static and not mobile enough.” He also cited intelligence failures and the decision not to cancel planned police leave. Nunez apologised and accepted partial responsibility.
Lecornu accused far-left and ultra-left groups of organising violence during the protests. Authorities have assigned 200 investigators to identify people involved, while parliament is establishing a commission of inquiry into the unrest. Police also arrested a man suspected of setting a fire that destroyed Limoges’ historic town hall; officials said he belonged to an ultra-left group and was on a security watch list.
Targeted curfews, including restrictions on minors in some areas, were extended after officials said they helped restore relative calm. Paris police also temporarily banned people from carrying petrol or gas containers. New curfews could be imposed where authorities consider them necessary.
