The Trump administration has revoked more than 300,000 US visas since President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025, the State Department said Tuesday.
The total has risen sharply from the more than 175,000 revocations reported by the department on August 10. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said on X that the administration had revoked visas “at a faster pace than any administration in history.” He said the government had “zero tolerance” for visa holders who break the law, commit fraud or undermine national security.
Trump has said his immigration crackdown and deportation campaign are intended to improve domestic security. His administration has also tightened social media screening for immigrants and visa applicants and imposed higher fees for some work visas.
Rights advocates have criticized the crackdown, saying it has infringed due-process and free-speech rights and raised concerns about racial profiling. They have particularly opposed visa actions involving foreign nationals who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations and people targeted over social media comments about the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Advocates have also accused the administration of invoking national security to target critics and using individual fraud cases to justify broader scrutiny of immigrant communities, including Somali Americans in Minnesota.
