Israeli police said Monday they had arrested 10 suspects in connection with violence in the occupied West Bank, including attacks on an American photojournalist and a European diplomatic delegation during the Palestinian olive harvest.
Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine was assaulted Friday while covering Palestinian olive harvesting. The newspaper said dozens of masked settlers attacked harvesters, knocked Levine down, kicked her repeatedly and took her cameras and phone. Deutsche Welle and other outlets reported that she suffered broken vertebrae.
On Saturday, masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians and a delegation near the Christian town of Taybeh that included French, Belgian and Polish diplomats. Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries in France, was knocked down and struck but did not require hospital treatment. A Belgian diplomatic vehicle was also damaged. Palestinian residents were injured in the violence, according to The Irish Times.
Police West Bank commander Major General Moshe Finchi said the arrests followed the weekend’s “severe incidents of violence,” and police said the investigation remained underway. Israeli media reported that the Shin Bet domestic security service was involved.
The attacks drew condemnation from the United States, European Union, France, Belgium and Poland, whose officials called for accountability. Israel’s Foreign Ministry and military condemned the violence. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the diplomats had entered a sensitive area without coordinating with the military and said the facts surrounding Levine’s assault remained unclear.
Israeli rights group Yesh Din has recorded at least 170 settler attacks since September 27.
