US President Donald Trump said Thursday that the scheduled execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009, will not be livestreamed.
Hasan is still scheduled to be executed by firing squad on December 3. Trump said immediate family members of the victims may attend in person if they choose.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had announced the livestream plan the previous week, arguing that a public broadcast would demonstrate the consequences of such attacks. Trump similarly said broadcasting the execution might have served as a deterrent, but reversed course after opposition from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, religious leaders, rights groups and international observers. Polls also indicated that most Americans opposed showing the execution online.
Vice President JD Vance was among the Republicans who expressed reservations. House Speaker Mike Johnson said some lawmakers feared that footage of the execution could become a recruiting tool for terrorists.
A Pentagon spokesperson told The Guardian that Trump and Hegseth discussed the decision before Trump’s announcement and that Hegseth supports it.
A military jury convicted Hasan in 2013 of premeditated murder and attempted murder for the November 5, 2009, shooting, which also injured 32 people. If carried out, his sentence would be the first US military execution in more than 60 years.
