Airbnb limits checkout chores under new global rules

Airbnb will restrict hosts from requiring guests to perform time-consuming checkout chores under updated global rules applying to reservations booked on or after Nov. 20.
Hosts generally will no longer be allowed to ask guests to complete tasks that require “significant effort or time” or would typically be handled by a cleaner. Prohibited requests include stripping beds, starting laundry, washing and putting away dishes, and taking rubbish to an off-site facility.
The policy still permits simpler requests. Hosts may ask guests to place used dishes in the sink, separate rubbish from recycling or secure waste in an animal-proof container where local conditions warrant it. They can also set seven standard house rules covering matters such as check-in and checkout times, occupancy limits, smoking, quiet hours and pets. Those rules must be displayed in full when a reservation is made.
Airbnb said it revised the policy after hearing that house rules could be confusing, burdensome and difficult to manage. Guests have also long complained about being charged cleaning fees while being expected to complete extensive chore lists.
Some hosts have opposed the change. CBS News reported that more than 5,000 people signed a petition seeking its reversal, arguing that the restricted tasks are part of responsible use of another person’s property and that additional cleaning costs could lead to higher prices.
Airbnb said repeated violations could result in reduced visibility for a listing or a notice warning guests about the host’s noncompliance.
