Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson, a 15-year Air Force veteran, died after falling during a pregame rappelling demonstration at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Saturday, according to Nellis Air Force Base.

Patterson was descending by rope from the stadium rafters before the University of Texas at San Antonio’s football game against Navy when he fell onto the field. Medical personnel treated him at the scene before he was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

He was one of four service members scheduled to participate in the demonstration during UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game. Patterson, a Tactical Air Control Party instructor from Fort Stewart, Georgia, was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2.

The Air Force said Patterson had received several decorations, including the Air and Space Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Air and Space Achievement Medal. He was named the Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year in 2022.

The game began after a delay of about 10 minutes. UTSA said it was providing well-being services to affected students, faculty and staff. The incident remains under investigation.
