An Australian television reporter and another bystander rescued a driver from a sinking four-wheel-drive in floodwaters north of Brisbane after the vehicle entered deep water on Buchanan Road in Morayfield, Queensland.
Australian Broadcasting Corporation reporter Will Murray was at the scene when he saw the vehicle drive into the flooded road, stall and begin floating downstream. Murray called emergency services but said the driver disappeared from view within seconds, prompting him to hand the phone to ABC camera operator Liz Pickering and swim toward the vehicle.
Another man joined Murray. After they were unable to open the nearest door, Murray reached the rear passenger-side door and pulled it open. The driver moved toward the opening, and the two rescuers pulled him from the vehicle and helped him reach shallow water. The SUV subsequently disappeared beneath the floodwater.
Murray said emergency services arrived about 10 minutes after the rescue. He said the driver told him he had not seen warning signs and did not realize how deep the water was. Pickering recorded the rescue and said the two men had saved the driver’s life.
About 170 millimetres of rain had fallen in the area since that morning, according to the ABC. Queensland authorities advise residents not to enter or swim in floodwater.
