Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would accept freezing the current front lines as an initial step toward ending the war with Russia, while stressing that Ukraine would need security guarantees in subsequent negotiations.
“Right now, we have to freeze, and I think this is a real way to end this war,” Zelenskyy said Wednesday in an interview with Fox News. He described a ceasefire and an end to the killing as the minimum Ukraine needs from Russia before seeking guarantees from the United States and European countries.
Zelenskyy was also due to meet U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Oslo for peace talks, according to a Norwegian government statement cited by the South China Morning Post. U.S. envoy Jared Kushner was expected to participate online.
In a separate podcast interview, Zelenskyy said President Donald Trump could bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiations by applying to Moscow the same pressure and rhetoric Washington has directed at Kyiv. He argued that the United States has economic leverage, including sanctions approved by Congress.
Russia has opposed ceasefire proposals, saying a pause would allow Ukraine to replenish its forces. On Thursday, Zelenskyy said deadly Russian attacks showed “no real change” in Moscow’s approach, despite Putin telling Witkoff that Russia was prepared to resume trilateral talks with Ukraine and the United States.
