Myanmar authorities released rare photographs of detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi after officials delivered a package from Britain’s King Charles III on Monday.
The package contained two books about soil, a sealed envelope and sealed diplomatic correspondence, according to a statement by Myanmar’s presidential spokeswoman. The two photographs showed Suu Kyi meeting Home Ministry officials in a wood-panelled room. They were the first official images of her in two months, following photographs of an August meeting with a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Authorities described the 81-year-old Nobel laureate as a “special female prisoner,” a term they had not previously used for her. Suu Kyi has been detained since the military overthrew her elected government in 2021. She was moved to house arrest after former junta chief Min Aung Hlaing became civilian president in April following elections that excluded her party.
Suu Kyi’s son, Kim Aris, welcomed the gifts but said their delivery should not be used to create “an illusion of normality or gain international legitimacy” for Myanmar’s government. Rights groups say the charges against Suu Kyi were fabricated to restore military rule. Britain and other members of the international community have called for her release and sought access to her, demands Myanmar’s government has rejected.
