A minibus carrying truck drivers collided with a train at the Channel Tunnel terminal in Coquelles, northern France, on Thursday evening, injuring the driver and 18 passengers, French authorities said.
The vehicle struck the train at a loading platform at about 7:27 p.m. local time. The passengers, all men of various nationalities, were preparing to use LeShuttle, which transports vehicles and their occupants between France and Britain.
Two people — the minibus driver and one passenger — were seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital in Lille, according to updated figures reported by Deutsche Welle and the BBC. Earlier reports had said five people were seriously injured. Officials said none of the injuries appeared life-threatening, while the other passengers were taken to nearby hospitals.
The cause of the collision was not immediately known. The prosecutor’s office in Boulogne-sur-Mer opened an investigation on suspicion of unintentional injury.
LeShuttle passenger services were briefly suspended while emergency crews assisted the injured, but freight traffic continued and normal operations later resumed. Eurostar said no Eurostar train was involved and its services between continental Europe and London were unaffected.
