Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called on fellow Republican Vivek Ramaswamy to withdraw a campaign ad featuring Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton.
“I would urge the Ramaswamy campaign to take this down. It’s just wrong,” DeWine told reporters, describing the ad as deeply troubling. His criticism joined broader bipartisan objections to the advertisement.
In the ad, Arthur says Acton has lied about her childhood and urges voters not to elect her. Acton has said she last saw her mother in court in 1978, when she was 12, after accusing her stepfather of sexually abusing her. Records obtained by Columbus station ABC 6 supported much of Acton’s account, including that her mother and stepfather were arrested and that her stepfather faced charges related to the abuse.
Acton denied lying and criticized Ramaswamy’s campaign for featuring her mother, whom she described as unwell. Her campaign released a response ad featuring her brother, Phil, who said both siblings suffered abuse and that Acton “always got the worst of it.”
Ramaswamy confirmed that his campaign was responsible for the ad. He told ABC 6 that Arthur had not been coached or paid to appear in it.
