US President Donald Trump has waived sweeping sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia shortly before they were due to take effect, saying the move was in the national interest. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday that the waiver would amount to a 60-day pause while the administration assesses the potential effects on the US and global economies.
The measures were included in legislation passed with bipartisan support in September and signed by Trump. They targeted Russian officials, financial institutions and Moscow’s so-called shadow fleet of oil tankers, while authorizing tariffs of up to 100% on goods from major purchasers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India.
Rubio said the review would consider the wider impact of restrictions involving countries beyond Russia, particularly amid global conflicts and rising oil and diesel prices. Trump said the decision would benefit the United States but told reporters that his final position had not yet been announced.
The waiver follows Trump’s agreement to allow Russian diesel exports as part of an effort to lower energy prices. It drew criticism from lawmakers in both parties. Republican Senator Thom Tillis called the move “beyond irresponsible,” while Senator Ted Cruz described it as “a mistake.” Democratic Representative Don Beyer said it defied congressional intent and betrayed Ukraine.
Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin, welcomed the waiver as an “important and truly historic moment.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that easing pressure on Moscow would help fund and prolong Russia’s war in Ukraine.
