Typhoon Champi closes schools and disrupts flights as it approaches Taiwan

publishers 14articles 18first reported 18 Oct, 18:59 UTCdeveloping since 19 Oct · 12 editions

Taiwan closed schools and government offices across most of the country as Typhoon Champi approached, bringing forecasts of torrential rain, strong winds and waves exceeding 10 meters. All municipalities except Kinmen County announced closures, although only Green Island and Orchid Island were included in Taitung County.

The Central Weather Administration expanded its land warning to 19 regions after issuing a sea warning Wednesday. As of 5 p.m. Thursday, Champi was about 450 kilometers east of Taiwan’s southernmost point, moving northwest before turning north-northwest at 18 kph. It had maximum sustained winds of 173 kph, gusts up to 198 kph and a radius of 320 kilometers.

Forecasters said the storm’s center was expected to pass within 80 kilometers of Taiwan’s coast, though landfall remained possible. Champi was forecast to come closest from Thursday night into early Friday, with mountainous areas in northern and northeastern Taiwan potentially receiving 600 to 900 millimeters of rain.

The storm disrupted regional travel. Taiwanese authorities reported 125 flight cancellations Thursday, mostly on domestic routes. Japan Airlines, ANA and Skymark canceled more than 100 flights scheduled between Thursday and Sunday, affecting over 11,000 passengers. Hong Kong carriers canceled or rescheduled more than a dozen Taiwan- and Japan-bound flights, while Thai Airways advised passengers to check schedules.

Champi also forced daily adjustments to the U.S.-Japan Keen Sword military exercise to protect participants. Earlier in its path, the typhoon prompted presidential emergency actions across the Mariana Islands.
