U.S. First Lady Melania Trump helped broker a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky, the White House said Friday. The agreement is intended to permit humanitarian aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians from the front-line city.
The White House said the truce would begin Oct. 29 and that Trump and a representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian officials on its terms. The BBC reported that both countries confirmed the agreement, although Kyiv had not announced a specific start time. Moscow said Russian forces would stop firing on Oct. 27, two days before the White House’s stated start date.
Under the arrangement, civilian representatives from Russia and Ukraine are expected to visit residents, assess their needs and coordinate transportation for people choosing to evacuate to either Ukrainian- or Russian-controlled territory. An unnamed American media organization will accompany the teams to document the operation, according to the first lady’s office.
Oleshky, across the Dnipro River from Kherson, had about 24,000 residents before Russia seized it early in its 2022 invasion. The White House estimates that 1,700 to 2,000 people remain, mostly elderly residents, along with about 50 children. Residents face severe shortages of food, medicine, clean water and electricity. The ceasefire’s duration was not announced.
