Orange warnings issued as Storm Boelo approaches Ireland

Met Éireann has issued orange and yellow weather warnings as Storm Boelo is forecast to bring heavy rain and damaging winds to Ireland over the weekend, shortly after Storm Austen.

An orange rain warning for Kerry will run from 7am to 2pm on Saturday, with heavy and intense rainfall expected. An orange wind warning for Donegal, Leitrim, Galway, Mayo and Sligo is due to take effect at 2pm Saturday and remain in place until 9am Sunday, according to RTÉ. Yellow rain and wind warnings will also cover much of the west and southwest.

Met Éireann warned that saturated ground following Storm Austen could increase the danger of surface-water and river flooding. Strong onshore winds, high tides and large waves may also cause coastal flooding and overtopping along the west coast. Other possible effects include fallen trees, power outages, property damage and disruption to transport and outdoor events.

The UK Met Office has issued warnings for Northern Ireland, where gusts of 50-60mph are forecast, potentially reaching 65-75mph in exposed or coastal areas. Scotland and northern England are also expected to experience strong winds and heavy showers.

Some sporting events have already been postponed or rescheduled because of the forecast, including the Antrim senior hurling final and racing at Galway. Storm Boelo is the second named storm to reach Ireland after Storm Austen, which caused power cuts and transport disruption before moving eastwards.
