South African police have opened a murder investigation after a foreign national was beaten to death by a crowd of about 50 people in central Durban on Thursday morning.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said two men broke away from a group marching along Dr Pixley kaSeme Street and approached the victim before the larger crowd assaulted him. The unidentified man, believed to have been in his late 30s or early 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not disclosed his nationality or identified any suspects. Netshiunda said investigators had not established a motive and warned against speculation.

A security guard who spoke anonymously to GroundUp said the group had been targeting immigrants and claimed that roaming vigilantes had intimidated local residents and shopkeepers for weeks. That account has not been confirmed by police.

The killing occurred amid months of demonstrations demanding action against undocumented migrants. Some protests have escalated into violence, including the burning of vehicles and attacks on shops in Durban and Soweto earlier in October. Several African governments have reported that their citizens were killed in xenophobic attacks, while South African authorities have disputed some of those claims and linked certain deaths to criminal activity.

The South African government has condemned anti-migrant violence while acknowledging calls for immigration reform. It says tens of thousands of foreign nationals have been deported or repatriated during a crackdown launched earlier this year.
