The death toll from a Houthi ballistic missile strike on a government training camp in southern Yemen rose to 60 on Tuesday, Yemeni officials said. More than 200 people were wounded and at least a dozen remained missing after Monday’s attack on the al-Alam camp in Shabwa province.
Officials said most of the casualties were new recruits undergoing training for internal security and police duties. The missiles struck as recruits lined up in formation. Shabwa’s provincial government said three ballistic missiles hit the camp, located in Jardan district north of the provincial capital, Ataq.
Hospitals in Shabwa were overwhelmed, and some critically wounded patients were transferred to facilities in neighboring Hadramout and Aden. Authorities appealed for blood donations.
The Houthis claimed responsibility, saying they had targeted what they described as Saudi enemy gatherings and caused dozens of casualties. Shabwa Governor Awad Ibn al-Wazir said the recruits were being prepared to provide security within the province and had not participated in combat or front-line mobilization.
The attack came amid renewed fighting between the Iran-backed Houthis and forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized, Saudi-supported government following the collapse of a yearslong truce. Shabwa authorities called the strike a military escalation, while government officials said they would investigate how so many recruits were left exposed to missile attack.
