Philippine authorities are investigating allegations that Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, possessed child sexual abuse material at his former home in Cebu.
Philippine Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty said the country’s anti-trafficking and online child sexual exploitation task force in Cebu was investigating. The allegations were reportedly made by Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., who told *The Sun* that he found images on computers and phones stored at the property. Philippine Interior Minister Jonvic Remulla told the BBC that police had secured a computer for forensic examination.
Thomas Markle Sr., 82, denied possessing such material, describing the allegations to the *Daily Mail* as “sick lies.” No investigative findings have been announced.
Meghan said she was “deeply distressed” and that her thoughts were with any children who might have been harmed. She said a letter containing “troubling and disturbing allegations” about her father had been sent to London’s Metropolitan Police and its Royalty and Specialist Protection unit in 2018, then shared with her. She said she had been assured at the time that the claims were being investigated.
The duchess said those allegations were the reason she kept her distance from her father and did not allow him contact with her children. She added that she hoped justice would be served and that protecting children would remain the priority.
