Pope Leo XIV has begun a gradual return to public duties after surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, while doctors have since said the cancer was localized and requires no further treatment.

The 71-year-old underwent a 90-minute video-assisted operation at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Oct. 13 after a lung nodule was discovered. A histological examination identified the tumour as lung adenocarcinoma. The Vatican described the surgery as successful and without complications.

Leo was discharged on Oct. 17 after blood tests, a chest X-ray and a clinical evaluation. The following day, he appeared unaided at a window of the Apostolic Palace to recite the Angelus prayer before crowds in St. Peter’s Square, his first public engagement since the operation.

“Now that I have overcome this delicate phase I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers,” he said. He thanked well-wishers and the doctors, nurses and other staff who treated him, adding that the experience had made him feel close to people living with illness.

Surgeon Stefano Margaritora described the pope’s condition as “absolutely satisfactory” and estimated that full recovery from the operation would take about 10 more days. According to Vatican News, a subsequent oncological assessment found the disease was localized and concluded that no additional treatment was necessary. Margaritora also said there were no clinical reasons to cancel Leo’s planned Nov. 6-17 trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
