France will deploy about 70,000 police and gendarmes nationwide on Saturday as authorities prepare for renewed protests following riots and looting the previous weekend, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said Friday.
Riot squads, specialized units and police trainees will be mobilized, with some officers assigned to protect government and public buildings. Nuñez said authorities wanted forces to be “extremely mobile, agile and effective” and warned that calls for violence and looting were circulating on social media. Restrictions will include limited protest routes in Paris and bans on demonstrations in central areas of Lyon and Orléans.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu had acknowledged that the earlier security operation was “too static and not mobile enough.” He accused far-left and ultra-left groups of organizing violence on the sidelines of nationwide demonstrations over the cost of living. The unrest on Oct. 17 included clashes, looting and fires in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and other cities.
Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said courts had sent 217 people to prison over the violence, about half of them first-time offenders.
President Emmanuel Macron convened his defense council and met representatives of high school students, whose demonstrations over school conditions helped start a movement that broadened into wider protests. According to presidential aides cited by the South China Morning Post and The Punch, Macron also postponed a planned trip to Nigeria and Senegal amid the crisis.
