French authorities imposed local curfews in parts of Paris and several other cities following a weekend of nationwide protests marked by arson, looting and clashes with police.
In Paris, movement was restricted from 11 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday in Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district, while unauthorized gatherings were banned in other central areas. Restrictions were also introduced in cities including Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Lyon and Lille, with some applying specifically to minors. Colombia One reported that localized curfews continued Tuesday and that affected streets remained relatively calm overnight.
The unrest grew out of student demonstrations over school conditions and broadened to include trade unions, Yellow Vest activists and protesters concerned about living costs. Yellow Vest organizers called for another round of demonstrations this weekend.
Officials reported roughly 2,400 to 2,500 arrests and about 1,000 injured police officers. Government and business groups said more than 2,000 businesses were affected, with some official estimates putting the number at 3,000. Damage was expected to total hundreds of millions of euros.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged that police had “lost control” in some cities and offered to resign, but President Emmanuel Macron rejected the resignation, citing the need for continuity in law-enforcement command. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said targeted curfews were preferable for now but did not rule out a state of emergency. The government also announced support for damaged businesses and workers unable to work because of the unrest.
