Airbnb limits checkout chores under new global rules

Airbnb will restrict hosts from requiring guests to complete time-consuming checkout chores under a new global policy applying to reservations booked on or after November 20.
Hosts generally may no longer ask guests to perform work that would typically be handled by a cleaner, including stripping beds, starting laundry, washing and putting away dishes, or taking rubbish to an off-site facility. Airbnb said such requests can negatively affect stays and reviews, particularly when guests also face cleaning costs.
The platform will still permit limited requests it considers reasonable. Hosts may ask guests to place used dishes in the sink, gather towels, separate rubbish from recycling or use animal-proof waste containers where necessary. Requests tied to local conditions, such as limiting shower times during water restrictions, may also be allowed.
Hosts can set seven standard house rules, including check-in and checkout times, occupancy limits, smoking restrictions, quiet hours and pet policies. The rules must be fully displayed when a guest books. Repeated violations could result in reduced visibility for a listing or a notice warning guests about the host’s conduct, according to CBS News.
The changes have drawn opposition from some hosts. More than 5,000 people signed a Change.org petition arguing that the policy is unreasonable and could raise cleaning expenses that may be passed on to guests.
