A gunman firing from a vehicle killed one person and wounded five others, including a 12-year-old girl, in towns southwest of Paris on Friday, according to French officials and later reports. Earlier accounts put the number of wounded at four.
The shootings occurred in Trappes and nearby La Verrière, where the attacker opened fire near locations including a playground, petrol station and medical centre. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said the gunman appeared to fire randomly and intended to cause as many casualties as possible. Three victims, including the girl, suffered life-threatening injuries, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said. A local mayor later said the girl was in stable condition.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said the suspected attacker had been apprehended and placed in police custody. The 39-year-old suspect was arrested in nearby Coignières, according to local reports. CNA reported, citing a police source, that officers found a submachine gun and tear-gas grenades in his possession.
France’s National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office took over the investigation, opening a case involving murder connected to a terrorist enterprise. Authorities are examining whether the victims were targeted because of their race, ethnicity, nationality or religion. Rabeh described the attack as racist and probably Islamophobic, while Nuñez said the motive remained under investigation.
President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for the victims, their families and residents of the Yvelines area.
