At least 34 children and a teacher were killed when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Thursday, according to officials and hospital authorities. More than a dozen children were injured, including several in critical condition.

The collapse began in an upper-floor classroom at Al-Khair School in the city’s Dir Colony area after lessons had started. Police said falling rubble then crashed through classrooms below, trapping pupils across three floors. Residents and emergency workers pulled children from the debris, while narrow surrounding streets complicated access for ambulances and rescue teams.

Peshawar police chief Mian Saeed described the building’s roof slabs as substandard and said the structure had been overloaded. Police arrested the school’s owner and said investigators would examine possible building-code violations. Provincial authorities also formed a fact-finding committee to report on the collapse.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi ordered safety audits of private and government schools across the province. He said those responsible for negligence would face legal action and announced compensation of 1 million Pakistani rupees for each bereaved family and 300,000 rupees for each injured person.

On Friday, families demanded justice as mourners gathered outside the school and thousands attended funeral prayers in Peshawar. Officials said everyone trapped beneath the rubble had been recovered.
