Saudi Arabia has postponed its annual Future Investment Initiative conference until 2027 following a series of missile and drone attacks by Iran-backed Houthi militants, organizers said Monday.
The event, known as “Davos in the Desert,” had been scheduled for Oct. 26-29 in Riyadh. Organizers said new dates would be announced soon. The postponement follows an Oct. 10 attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300, according to CNBC.
Houthi forces have continued launching missiles and drones toward Saudi Arabia in recent weeks. A Saudi military spokesperson said the kingdom destroyed several drones aimed at the Riyadh region on Friday and Saturday and intercepted missiles over the Red Sea, including one headed toward the port city and oil terminal of Yanbu.
Before the postponement, reports said some Wall Street executives were reconsidering plans to attend because of security concerns and disrupted flights. Listed speakers included JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser.
Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund launched the conference in 2017 as part of the kingdom’s effort to attract investment and diversify its economy beyond oil.
