The NFL plans to proceed with Sunday’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France despite recent unrest in Paris and other French cities.
The league said it is working with local authorities and increasing security for the first NFL regular-season game in the French capital. NFL executive Peter O’Reilly said officials had been on the ground in Paris for more than a week and that protecting teams, fans and others involved was the league’s priority.
France experienced rioting and looting on October 17 after weeks of largely peaceful demonstrations over school conditions and the cost of living. Additional protests are planned for Saturday, with French authorities preparing a large security operation. The U.S. State Department advised Americans to avoid demonstrations and areas of unrest and urged visitors attending the game to exercise caution.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. Embassy had no indication that the game would be unsafe. Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers also expressed confidence in the NFL’s decision, saying he believed the league would cancel if conditions were unsafe.
Some related events have been disrupted. The Steelers canceled a fan event in the Bastille area, while the NFL closed a Friday fan experience because of adverse weather. Storm Austen also forced the Steelers to cancel a stadium practice and prompted changes to the Saints’ media schedule. Both teams are in France preparing for the game.
