Apple will have limited quantities of its first folding phone, the iPhone Duo, available to walk-in customers when the device reaches stores on Friday, following heavy demand during preorders.
The company said availability will vary by market. Customers in the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico and much of the United Kingdom and Europe will be able to collect online orders or attempt limited walk-in purchases. Stores in mainland China, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates will provide devices only to customers who ordered online. In Macau, limited inventory will be reserved for walk-in sales.
Apple has also imposed a limit of two iPhone Duo units per customer through its online stores in multiple countries, Engadget reported. The restriction applies regardless of the devices’ configurations. Some customers reportedly ordered more than two when preorders began Oct. 16, and it is unclear when the cap took effect.
Initial online inventory sold out within minutes, pushing some estimated delivery dates into January. Engadget found Apple stores showing a Jan. 22 shipping estimate, although some customers have reported that their delivery dates were subsequently moved forward. Apple said demand had been “nothing short of extraordinary” and that it was working to deliver the device as quickly as possible.
