U.S. Vice President JD Vance said he would stay out of Israel’s October 27 parliamentary election, declining to follow President Donald Trump in endorsing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“I’m not anti-endorsing him. I’m not pro-endorsing him. I’m not getting involved in Israeli elections,” Vance said in a Monday interview with journalist Mark Halperin. He said his attention was on U.S. candidates and the November 3 midterm elections. In subsequent remarks reported by Middle East Eye, Vance reiterated that he was neither attacking nor endorsing Netanyahu.

Trump publicly backed Netanyahu on Sunday, describing his longtime ally as “Strong, Brave, and Brilliant” as the Israeli leader seeks another term. Polling cited by Al Jazeera has shown the opposition Yashar party, led by former Israeli military chief Gadi Eisenkot, ahead of Netanyahu’s Likud party.

Vance’s refusal contrasts with his intervention in Hungary’s April election, when he supported then-Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose party subsequently lost. Vance has also previously voiced support for Germany’s AfD party.

The Trump endorsement has drawn criticism from former White House adviser Steve Bannon, who told The Hill on Monday that he was “not wild” about the president weighing in. Vance emphasized that his position was neutral, saying he would focus instead on domestic campaigning.
