Typhoon Champi brought strong winds and torrential rain to Taiwan on Friday, shutting schools, offices and financial markets across most of the island and causing widespread travel disruption.
One man died after being swept away by storm-driven waves in Pingtung County’s Liouciou Township. Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operations Center reported 350 injuries by Friday evening, while the government said more than 2,600 people had been evacuated from vulnerable mountainous areas. More than 77,000 homes lost power, although service was restored to most of them.
Taiwan’s transport ministry said all 262 domestic flights and 717 international flights had been cancelled. High-speed rail continued operating, and Taipei’s public transportation ran on reduced service. TSMC said its chipmaking operations remained normal without significant impact.
The Central Weather Administration said Champi was about 100 kilometers east of Yilan on Friday evening, moving north-northeast with maximum sustained winds of 155 kph and a 320-kilometer radius. Forecasters expected the storm to pass close to northeastern Taiwan before turning toward waters off eastern China and later southern Japan, though landfall in Taiwan could not be ruled out.
Rainfall exceeded 500mm at one Yilan weather station, and cumulative totals of up to 900mm were forecast in mountainous areas of New Taipei City, Taoyuan and Yilan. Champi also caused flight cancellations and power outages in Japan and prompted adjustments to the U.S.-Japan Keen Sword military exercise.
