US first lady Melania Trump helped broker a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, according to the White House. Ukrainian and Russian officials confirmed an agreement intended to allow humanitarian aid into the city and permit residents to evacuate.
The White House described Oleshky, in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region, as a front-line city “on the brink of disaster,” with shortages of food, medicine and clean water. Residents who choose to leave are expected to receive transportation to either Ukrainian- or Russian-controlled territory, while civilian representatives from both countries are to assess the needs of people who remain.
The announced timing was not fully consistent. A statement from Melania Trump’s office said the truce would begin on Oct. 29, while Russian officials said their forces would stop firing at 02:00 GMT on Oct. 27. Ukrainian officials did not publicly specify a start time. The duration of the ceasefire was also not announced.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed the first lady’s involvement and confirmed that residents who wished to leave would be able to do so. Ukrainian lawmaker Davyd Arakhamia said an operation to unblock Oleshky and its surroundings would begin soon.
Russia seized Oleshky during the opening days of its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Residents have described persistent shelling, mined roads and severe shortages; some told the BBC they had resorted to eating garden weeds.
