Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola case in a decade after a woman who traveled from Uganda tested positive in the capital, Abuja, health authorities said.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said the woman arrived on Oct. 3. Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate said she began showing symptoms on Oct. 7 and was admitted to a private hospital on Oct. 11. The case was announced on Oct. 20.
At an emergency meeting Wednesday, Nigerian officials identified the patient as a diplomat and said three rounds of molecular testing found the Bundibugyo strain, which the World Health Organization also confirmed. An official said her condition had deteriorated to multi-organ failure. Earlier reports said she was isolated and receiving care.
Authorities have identified 44 contacts and are seeking others who may have been exposed. Infection-control measures are being strengthened at the hospital where the patient was treated.
The case is linked to a regional outbreak that began in the Democratic Republic of Congo in May and has spread to Uganda and Kenya. More than 9,000 infections and about 4,300 deaths have been recorded, with most cases in Congo. Kenya has reported nine infections.
Nigerian states have increased preparedness. Lagos said it was strengthening surveillance, isolation capacity, laboratory testing and screening at entry points. Bayelsa said Saturday that it had recorded no confirmed cases while intensifying surveillance and reviewing treatment arrangements.
