Manchester United fell to a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth on Sunday, extending their Premier League winless run and increasing pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
Carrick left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench throughout the match after the midfielder criticised his tactics following United’s 4-1 Champions League loss to Como in midweek. Carrick had said before Sunday’s game that he would make decisions in the club’s best interests; he later described Fernandes’ omission as a football decision.
Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute from Justin Kluivert’s free kick. Marcus Tavernier doubled Bournemouth’s lead five minutes later after Adrien Truffert dispossessed Leny Yoro and supplied the pass. Evanilson completed the scoring with 20 minutes remaining, rounding goalkeeper Senne Lammens before finishing from a narrow angle.
The result left United 16th in the Premier League on seven points, one point above the relegation zone. They have not won a league match since beating Ipswich Town on August 30.
Carrick told Sky Sports he did not know what would happen next but said he would continue to do his best for the club. Stand-in captain Harry Maguire said the players needed to examine what more they could contribute, adding that their individual performances had not been good enough.
