Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado returned to Venezuela on Sunday after about 10 months in exile, announcing her arrival in a brief post on X: “I am here. With you.”
Her ally Edmundo González Urrutia, the exiled opposition candidate in Venezuela’s disputed 2024 presidential election, confirmed that Machado was in the country and said he planned to return soon. Social media footage showed Machado greeting supporters at the Sanctuary of the Divine Shepherdess in Barquisimeto, west of Caracas. It was not immediately clear how she entered Venezuela.
Machado left the country clandestinely in late 2025 to receive the Nobel Peace Prize after spending months in hiding. RTÉ reported that her party said Venezuelan authorities had blocked at least seven previous attempts to return.
Her arrival comes months after U.S. forces removed Nicolás Maduro and took him to New York to face criminal charges. Venezuela is now led by acting President Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s former vice-president. Machado and her allies have called for a presidential election, while Rodríguez has remained in office beyond an initially authorized 90-day term, according to The Hindu.
Asked about Machado’s return, U.S. President Donald Trump said he knew nothing about it and added: “I hope she’s safe.”
