French authorities tightened restrictions on demonstrations after unrest and looting during nationwide protests last weekend, while approved marches by unions and students remained scheduled in Paris.
President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday that “illegitimate” protests would be prohibited in the coming days and accused organised “ultra-left” groups of carrying out violent, “seditious acts” intended to bring down the Republic. He acknowledged shortcomings in the authorities’ response to the weekend unrest and said local officials could ban gatherings. Approved demonstrations may be rerouted away from city centres to protect businesses and public buildings.
Restrictions were imposed in parts of Paris and in cities including Lyon, Lille and Grenoble. However, an administrative court overturned an initial ban on a student gathering in Paris, allowing demonstrators to assemble in the 13th arrondissement. Students also protested in Lyon despite a ban.
The unrest grew from student protests over school conditions and staff shortages into broader demonstrations over living costs and public spending. More than half a million people joined protests across France on Saturday, according to Al Jazeera. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said 2,700 people had been detained since then in connection with rioting and looting.
Authorities are preparing a larger police deployment for another round of protests on Saturday, when student and workers’ unions plan to march from Place de la Bastille to Place de la Nation in Paris. Organisers from the Yellow Vest movement have said they will join the demonstration.
