A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is forecast to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm before crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast on October 28, the India Meteorological Department said.
In its Sunday evening bulletin, the IMD placed the system about 870 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam. It was expected to become a cyclonic storm early Monday, strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday and then intensify further as it approaches the coast. Landfall is forecast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, including the Yanam coast, with sustained winds of 115-125 kmph and gusts reaching 140 kmph.
The IMD has issued red alerts for extremely heavy rain in several Andhra Pradesh districts on October 27 and 28. Fishermen have been told to return to shore and avoid waters off Andhra Pradesh and Odisha during the storm. Authorities have not identified a more precise landfall location within the forecast corridor.
Andhra Pradesh has deployed 12 State Disaster Response Force battalions and seven National Disaster Response Force battalions, while requesting three additional NDRF units. Officials plan to move residents from likely impact zones to shelters by October 27.
Odisha has assigned ministers and senior officials to oversee preparations in vulnerable southern districts. Schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri are scheduled to close on October 28 and 29. Residents of low-lying areas and fragile homes are being moved to shelters, while pregnant women nearing delivery are being relocated to health facilities.
