Saudi-led coalition forces intercepted missiles and drones targeting Riyadh and southern Saudi Arabia on Sunday as fighting with Yemen’s Houthi movement intensified, according to coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki.
The coalition said it destroyed a ballistic missile and drones launched toward the Riyadh region, a cruise missile aimed at the southwestern city of Khamis Mushait, and 10 ballistic missiles targeting southern Saudi Arabia. No casualties or damage from Sunday’s interceptions were reported.
Saudi civil defence authorities briefly advised Riyadh residents to remain calm and seek shelter before saying the danger had passed. The interceptions followed reports that debris fell in the Mecca and Medina regions on Saturday after two missiles were shot down. The Houthis denied targeting the two holy cities and called the Saudi account false.
The Houthis said Saturday that they had conducted seven operations against Saudi airports, oil facilities, a pipeline and an airbase. They renewed warnings against using Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, describing it as a military target. The airport said domestic flights would operate from Terminal 1 and international services by national airlines from Terminal 2 beginning Sunday, after earlier attacks disrupted operations.
Inside Yemen, fighting continued around Taiz. Al Jazeera reported that Houthi forces advanced on Jabal Sabr, overlooking the city, while Yemeni government forces said they carried out more than 700 operations against Houthi targets on Saturday.
