Former President Barack Obama campaigned for Democratic candidates in Ohio and Michigan on Saturday, criticizing President Donald Trump and Republican allies as voters prepared for the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
At a packed rally in Cleveland, Obama described the Trump administration as defined by “chaos and cruelty and corruption and incompetence.” He accused Trump of breaking promises on prices and foreign conflicts and mocked his White House renovations, saying the president appeared more focused on self-promotion than governing.
Obama appeared with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton and former Sen. Sherrod Brown, who is challenging Republican Sen. Jon Husted. He also condemned a campaign advertisement from Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy featuring Acton’s estranged birth mother, who calls Acton a liar and questions her mental health. Obama said public officials should meet basic standards of decency and argued that Ramaswamy had crossed a line. Ramaswamy has defended the advertisement, as have Trump and Vice President JD Vance, while Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and other state Republicans have called for it to be withdrawn.
Obama later traveled to Michigan to support Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who is running against Republican Mike Rogers. He urged supporters in both states to vote early, saying, “Don’t procrastinate, don’t equivocate.” Democrats are seeking control of Congress, while Republicans currently hold both chambers.
