North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made an unannounced one-day visit Saturday to Dandong, China, where he met senior Chinese officials and pledged to advance relations between the two countries, state media reported Sunday.
Kim was accompanied by senior North Korean officials, including Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and his sister, Kim Yo Jong. He met Wang Huning, China’s fourth-highest-ranking official, while Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other officials were also present. Wang conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency and North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency.
The visit came ahead of the 76th anniversary of China’s entry into the 1950-53 Korean War. Kim paid tribute at a memorial to Chinese soldiers who fought alongside North Korea and said the countries’ friendship would be carried forward. He also attended a banquet hosted by Wang at Xi’s direction and visited a bus factory in Dandong.
Kim returned to North Korea over the recently opened New Amnok River Bridge, also known as the New Yalu River Bridge, which connects Dandong with Sinuiju. The crossing opened this month, more than a decade after its construction was completed in 2014.
The trip was Kim’s sixth visit to China since taking power in 2011 and his first known visit since traveling to Beijing in September 2025.
