Israeli forces have displaced large numbers of Palestinians and demolished homes during a military operation in Hebron in the occupied West Bank, launched after two Palestinian gunmen attacked an Israeli checkpoint on Friday.
Israeli figures said two soldiers were killed and three wounded in a roughly 20-minute gunfight, while both attackers were killed. The army said the operation, involving the Shin Bet security service and Border Police, was expected to continue for several days.
Estimates of the number displaced varied. Reuters reported about 1,200 people, Hebron municipal officials told The Guardian that roughly 1,500 had been evicted by Saturday afternoon, and Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said around 2,000 residents had been removed. Katz told Israeli broadcaster KAN they would not be allowed to return until Israel had dismantled what he called Hamas infrastructure in the city.
The Hebron municipality said about 35 hectares had been destroyed or designated for demolition in Ein Deir Baha, described as the attackers’ home district. It said displaced families were staying with relatives or in public facilities. Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that troops had also taken over some homes for use as barracks and observation posts.
Israeli forces sealed entrances to Hebron, disrupting schools, universities and municipal services. Wafa also reported at least 20 Palestinian detentions in Hebron and nearby towns.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a heavy response, while Israel said West Bank land crossings would close on election day.
