Storm Boelo brought severe wind and rain across western, northern and southwestern Ireland, leaving about 13,000 homes and businesses without power, according to ESB. Further outages were expected as the storm tracked north.
A Status Orange wind warning covered Donegal, Leitrim, Galway, Mayo and Sligo from 2pm Saturday until 9am Sunday. Met Éireann also issued a Status Red marine warning from Rossan Point to Bloody Foreland and Fair Head, forecasting westerly winds reaching violent storm force 11 at times. Amber warnings were issued for Derry and Antrim in Northern Ireland.
Yellow rain warnings covered Clare, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Leitrim, Limerick, Mayo and Sligo. Forecasters warned that saturated ground and high river levels following Storm Austen could increase the risk of surface-water and river flooding, particularly in the west and southwest. Other possible effects included fallen trees, coastal flooding, power-line damage and dangerous sea conditions.
Travel was disrupted by the storm. Dublin Airport reported that airlines had cancelled five outbound and four inbound flights by midday Saturday, with further disruption possible. Several ferry crossings between Dublin and Holyhead and between Rosslare and Pembroke were also cancelled or placed in doubt. Organisers of Sunday’s Dublin City Marathon said preparations were continuing as planned despite a Yellow wind warning for the capital.
