Israel Heads Into Close Election as Netanyahu’s Future Hangs on Coalition Talks

publishers 9articles 9first reported 25 Oct, 07:10 UTCdeveloping since 25 Oct · 7 editions

Israelis are set to vote on October 27 in a closely contested election that could determine whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in power. The election for all 120 seats in the Knesset is the first since the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, and the wars that followed in Gaza and elsewhere in the region.

Recent polling cited by Al Jazeera projects 52 seats for an opposition bloc and 50 for Netanyahu’s religious-nationalist alliance. Neither would reach the 61 seats needed for a governing majority, making negotiations with smaller parties decisive under Israel’s proportional representation system.

Netanyahu’s Likud could seek renewed support from Jewish Power, Religious Zionism and the ultra-Orthodox Shas and United Torah Judaism parties. Four opposition parties — Yashar, the Democrats, Yisrael Beytenu and the Together alliance — have agreed to cooperate in an effort to remove him. The bloc has not named a candidate for prime minister, though Yashar leader Gadi Eisenkot and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett are potential contenders.

Arab-led parties Ra’am and the Joint List are projected to win about 13 seats and could influence the outcome. Ra’am leader Mansour Abbas has indicated that his party may again support an opposition-led coalition. Tens of thousands of Israelis living abroad are also expected to return because most citizens must vote in person inside Israel.
