US President Donald Trump said Sunday that he was deciding whether to renew attacks on Iran or pursue an agreement, amid reports that the US military has prepared options for further strikes.
“I have a decision to make: Do I finish it off, which would be very easy to do, or do I make a deal?” Trump told Fox News. He later told reporters at the White House that there would be no strike Sunday. A day earlier, he had suggested an attack could come as soon as Sunday while also raising the possibility of a “big, beautiful” agreement with Tehran.
Al Jazeera, citing reporting by The Hill, said US Central Command had developed options for follow-up attacks if the White House authorises them. The preparations do not constitute an order to strike. Trump has said his objective is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused Washington of derailing negotiations but said efforts to reach an agreement should continue. The United States has meanwhile moved additional forces toward the Gulf and reduced staffing at some regional diplomatic facilities amid warnings of threats to US personnel.
The prospect of renewed attacks has also drawn domestic criticism. Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene warned that another strike before the November midterm elections could hurt Republicans, while podcaster Joe Rogan said Trump supporters who backed his campaign pledge of “no more wars” felt betrayed by the conflict.
