Israel will close all land crossings with the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, October 27, during its parliamentary election, the Israeli military said Sunday.
The military said Palestinian workers would be barred from entering Israeli communities in the West Bank and Jordan Valley on Sunday and Monday. On election day, it will prohibit Palestinian workers from entering or leaving those areas, including industrial zones, and close all land crossings.
The restrictions follow an attack by two Palestinian gunmen in the Hebron area on Friday that killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others. Al Jazeera reported that the gunmen were also killed. Hamas praised the attack but did not claim responsibility.
Israeli forces subsequently launched a large operation across the West Bank, including a lockdown in Hebron. Defence Minister Israel Katz said about 2,000 residents had been displaced and would not be allowed to return until the military had addressed what he called “all the Hamas issues in Hebron.” Hebron Mayor Yousef al-Ja’bari gave a higher estimate of 2,200 displaced people.
The Israeli military said it operated in 40 areas on Friday and Saturday and detained about 40 suspects, including alleged members of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would exact a heavy price for the attack and was preparing an operation on a scale not seen in the West Bank since 1967.
The Palestinian Authority called for international pressure to protect residents and described the measures as collective punishment. Israel said the operation would continue for several days.
