Former President Barack Obama campaigned for Democratic candidates in Detroit and Cleveland on Saturday, criticizing President Donald Trump and urging voters to cast ballots early ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

At Detroit’s Cass Technical High School, Obama endorsed Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson. He told thousands of attendees that El-Sayed was “fighting for change, real change” and would seek to expand affordable health care. El-Sayed, a doctor and former Wayne County health official, is running against Republican Mike Rogers in a close Senate race.

Obama also sought to mobilize Detroit’s predominantly Black electorate, according to NBC News, and highlighted the prospect of El-Sayed serving alongside Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin. He accused Trump of corruption and enriching his family, criticized congressional Republicans, and attacked the administration’s tariffs and handling of rising living costs.

Earlier in Cleveland, Obama rallied for Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown and gubernatorial nominee Amy Acton. He blamed higher fuel prices on what he called Trump’s “unnecessary war” with Iran and defended the nuclear agreement reached with Tehran during his presidency. He also urged voters in both states not to delay voting.

The appearances marked Obama’s first weekend of in-person campaigning in the midterm cycle and coincided with the opening of early voting in Michigan.
