US First Lady Melania Trump helped broker a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, the White House said, allowing humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations from the besieged community.

Ukraine and Russia confirmed arrangements for the truce, according to the BBC. The White House said it would begin on October 29, while Moscow said its forces would stop firing at 04:00 local time on October 27. The duration of the ceasefire was not announced.

Under the agreement, civilian representatives from Ukraine and Russia are expected to assess residents’ needs. Those wishing to leave will receive transportation toward either Ukrainian- or Russian-controlled territory, depending on their preference.

Melania Trump said she and a representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to establish the terms. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed her involvement and confirmed that residents who wished to leave would be able to do so. Ukrainian lawmaker Davyd Arakhamia said an operation to reach Oleshky and surrounding areas would begin soon, though Kyiv had not announced its own timetable.

Russian forces captured Oleshky, in the southern Kherson region, during the opening days of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Residents have faced persistent shelling and severe shortages of food, clean water, electricity and medicine. Some residents recently told the BBC that people had resorted to eating garden weeds and that children were suffering from malnutrition.
